An alternative to CPAP Therapy
What is Snoring / Sleep Apnea and why should you be concerned ?
Generally, if the muscles in your airway during sleep should relax to a degree that results in a excessive narrowing of your airway to a smaller opening, then the air flow may cause vibrations (snoring) or may even be blocked (Obstructive Sleep Apnea).
Obstructive Sleep Apnea can be a life threatening medical condition that result in oxygen deprivation that causes serious medical conditions. Some of these conditions are:
* Chronic sleepiness/fatigue and memory problems
* Falling asleep while at work, driving , or other inappropiate times
* Fragmented, non-refreshing sleep, morning headaches, difficulty concentrating, irritability, depression, family discord, an increased need to use the bathroom frequently during the night
* Elevated Blood pressure, Cardiac arythmias, increased risk of a heart attack or stroke.
We are please to offer an Oral Appliance alternative, TAP 3 (Thornton Adjustable Positioner), to the cumbersome CPAP mask. The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recomends oral appliances as a method of reducing sleep apnea/snoring associated health risks without the need for surgery, medications. Generally, the TAP 3 appliance holds the lower jaw in a forward position and thereby maintains a clear airway to reduce snoring and improve breathing. All patients are required to have a recent sleep study (by your medical provider)prior to any dental appliance fabrication. In addition, your medical insurance benefits (excluding Medicare) may be availible for this service.
Approximately 18 million Americans suffer from Obstructive Sleep Apnea, with 40% of adults over 40 being snorers. Most chronic snorers exhibit some degree of apnea tendencies, with 50% exhibiting elevated blood pressure.
